Karam, People Operations & Talent Manager

Tiimely's talent acquisition is built on inclusivity and a transparent process with communication and respect front of mind. Karam is at the heart of this, reading resumes, talking to candidates and onboarding new Tockers.

How did you hear about the role?

I used to work in an external recruitment agency specialising in tech and data, so I was always keeping an eye on the local scene. I’d heard of Tiimely (Tic:Toc back then) as one of the few SA-based tech companies at the time, and the word on the street was always positive. One day I spotted a role advertised, and I just had to apply!

How has your role changed since starting at Tiimely?

I started as a Talent Sourcer during a period of rapid growth following our Series D funding. My role later evolved into Talent Acquisition Manager, where I led our talent strategy, employer branding, recruitment, and onboarding. This year, I’ve expanded into people operations - supporting payroll, our employee share scheme, and leading initiatives across the employee lifecycle and experience. It’s been quite a journey!

Can you explain the interview process?

It was a thorough yet relaxed process. I had the chance to tour the office, meet a bunch of lovely people across three rounds, and complete a craft task that gave me a taste of what a day in the life of a Talent Sourcer would be like. It was definitely mentally exhausting but in a good way. By the end, I felt really invested in the journey, and I was elated when I got the offer.

Who have you looked to for advice throughout your career?

I’ve been lucky to work with some incredible leaders in recruitment and talent. Each of them has shared invaluable advice, and I’m still friends with many of them to this day.

What were your thoughts when you first stepped out of the lift and into the Tiimely office?

I was immediately drawn to the open-plan layout and the natural light pouring in from the tall glass windows. I love moving around the space and collaborating with different teams, and the way the office is designed makes it so easy to do that.

Is Adelaide your hometown, and what do you enjoy about working in the city?

I’m originally from Malaysia and came to Adelaide in 2012 for university. After graduating, I returned home briefly before migrating back in 2019. Coming from a bustling city like Kuala Lumpur, I really appreciate how compact and convenient Adelaide is. I also love that the city is surrounded by parklands making it easy to go for a walk in any direction and instantly feel relaxed.

What do you find most rewarding about your role?

There’s nothing more fulfilling than hiring great talent and then watching them grow and contribute to our success at Tiimely. I also love working in a lean team where I get to dabble in everything across People & Culture, not just recruitment. Every day is different, and that keeps it exciting.

Any advice for someone wanting to get into your field?

If you enjoy working with people, are naturally curious, and love solving problems, this is a great field to explore. It can be challenging to strike the balance between helping someone find their dream role and hiring the right talent for your organisation but when you get it right, it’s incredibly rewarding.

Do Tiimely’s values align with your own? In what way?

Absolutely. Our four values (Time to be human, build good bonds, take responsibility, and be transparent) really resonate with me. I especially connect with the balance between being human and taking responsibility in how we work each day.

How did you get started in your field?

I actually stumbled into recruitment after migrating to Australia. I was job hunting when a friend at a recruitment agency suggested I give it a go. I said yes (I was open to anything at that point!), went through a few interviews, psych testing and got the job. I’ve never looked back since!

Do you have a general philosophy or ethos you live by?

Yes, my approach to life is: do good, and treat others with kindness, respect, and compassion just the way you’d like to be treated.

Karam and his two Cavoodles.

What hobby are you into right now?

I spend most of my free time hanging out with my Cavoodles, gaming, or mixing music. It’s a fun mix of calm and creativity.

How do you like your coffee?

A skinny flat white is my go-to. Occasionally I’ll mix it up with oat milk or a latte just to keep things interesting!
